IN THE SAME PLACE

I have seen these things in a shaft of sunlight.

CYPRUS MUSEUM / IN THE SAME PLACE / KATERINA ATTALIDOU

Through a series of 86 watercolours that have been placed throughout the Cyprus Museum exhibition spaces, beside selected exhibits, artist Katerina Attalidou enters into a dialogue with the museum’s collection. Her approach is emotional and sensitive as she is led by the archaeological exhibits to their places of origin. The exhibition title denotes, amongst other things, the coexistence of the watercolours with selected exhibits, as well as her physical presence ‘in the same place’ in which the archaeological objects were discovered.

Attalidou’s works are accompanied by personal narrations about her numerous journeys and the places she visited and captured with her art. Her works reveal the natural, archaeological and historical dimensions of each place, offering the possibility of a very different museum experience. At the same time, we are invited to move around our landscapes and observe the places around us. The artist’s watercolours unfold the multiple layers and dimensions of each place and embrace both their tangible and intangible qualities. Most importantly, they remind us of our island’s wholeness and indivisibility.

• Places visited by the artist

I perceived the experience of visiting the excavation site, as well as the process of observing the wider area, in order to carry out the work, as a ritual, which placed me in a continuum of time and brought me in direct contact with what has been, with what remains important and unchanged, and finally with what is worth preserving and protecting.
