ivory throne, late 8th c. BC, Salamis (tomb 79)

18.4.22 The view from the third royal tomb of Salamis.

I climbed up the third tomb via a narrow path, fields spread around, a strip of sea in the background, the sea of Salamis. I had walked many times along the beach, from Agios Sergios to Salamis and then to Egkomi, and I was saddened each time by the amount of garbage, which was of such quantity that no matter how much I collected my eff orts seemed to make no difference. Last time I visited the coast of Salamis, pupils accompanied by their teachers had just collected dozens of bags of trash and were discussing the problem. I felt a sense of relief and thanked them.
