plank-shaped figurine of red polished ware; a human holding an infant, early Bronze Age (around 2000 BC), Lapithos

24.7.17 Agios Evlalios. At the harbour of ancient Lampousa, Lapithos, afternoon.

I first visited the area with Myrto in 2014. We found it very difficult to reach the location. The area has been crassly and excessively developed. We drove for some time west of Keryneia, between buildings that did not at all betray the proximity of the sea. How could we imagine that one needs to take the turn to the ‘Camelot Hotel’ in order to encounter this beautiful site, bathed with the light of a sunset that makes the whole mountain and Lapithos glitter in gold? At the beach, mostly Turkish Cypriot families enjoy the friendly and protected waters of the ancient harbour until late at night. Nearby, Agios Evlalios and a little further the Monastery of Acheiropoietos, situated within a military camp. Behind the beach the shooting range, with the carved tombs and shallow basins on the rocks of the shore.
