In Cyprus, excavations have brought to light the largest number of female drummers per population ratio, but we do not know the exact provenance of those exhibited in the Cyprus Museum. These women were perhaps priestesses who communicated with the divine and the elements of nature through the pulsation of the drum’s membrane. At Amathous, the Goddess was worshipped and many similar figurines have been found in the area. I drive up towards Agios Tychonas. The once cultivated terraces are all abandoned. The area is built with enormous houses in extravagant contemporary architectural styles, each house standing alone, without establishing any relation to history, the environment, without the slightest sign of awareness. All the land is divided into commercial plots. I stand there and make a watercolour of Amathous, as seen from above, the area around the sacred cliff appears misty, because of the humidity and the heat.
