pithos sherd with a sealing (hunting scene), late Bronze Age (12th c. BC), Maa-Palaiokastro

15.4.22 The Bay of Maa from Palaiokastro.

I am always impressed by the gentleness of the area, despite its touristic development. The land is fertile and the climate mild and this gives the place a special beauty, so that the harsh development seems not to have as much power as nature itself. But it’s still early spring, I imagine summers can be unbearable. Already, as time goes by, I can hear the speedboats going back and forth. Noise pollution is one of the island’s most serious problems, as is the chaotic construction. I dream of a Cyprus where travellers, foreign or local, will honour the land and its culture, moving around the island with awe, respect and quietude.
