funerary marble epigram (Greek alphabetic inscription), late 1st c. BC, Afaneia

2.6.16 On the way to Kontea the cypress tree, Afaneia.

I had sat in the Mesaoria plain to make this watercolour early in the morning. At the entrance of Afaneia stands this lonely cypress tree and the adobe structures. They moved me in the same way when I revisited the area, but I noticed that the new road is now elevated and, if I were sitting in the opposite fi eld today, the asphalt would had interfered with my vision of the landscape.
